Last month, I had the pleasure of being a guest on the weekly internet radio broadcast, Politics Beauty, on Blogtalk Radio to talk about toxic chemicals in salon products. The show is hosted by Tamara Johnson, a previously licensed nail technician, and the broadcast is specific to licensed beauty professionals in our country. Politics Beauty serves as a “voice in legislation” for licensed beauty professionals and as a means to connect the beauty industry to the legislative process affecting licensing, rules and regulations.

When it comes to toxic chemicals in salon products, it’s not just the stylists who are affected, but the clients, as well. Consumers and stylists are encouraged to work together in an effort to remove harmful toxins from salons, starting with the types of products that contain the most harmful ingredients. In October we brought you the story “Brazilian Blowout violates California air quality law” in which we explained a settlement was reached in January between the California Attorney General’s office and GIB LLC, the makers of Brazilian Blowout. The settlement required the company to use “CAUTION” stickers, cancer warnings and to stop deceptive advertising claiming their product was “safe” and “formaldehyde free”.

“Brazilian Blowout violates California air quality law”, says court documents. The California Attorney General’s office is asking the court to “cease all sales of Brazilian Blowout Solution in or into the state of California.”
In November 2010, the California Attorney General’s office filed a lawsuit against GIB LLC, the makers of Brazilian Blowout, claiming that the high levels of formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowout Solution, then advertised as “safe” and “formaldehyde free”, violated “six state environmental and consumer protection laws.” These laws include: “Proposition 65, the California Safe Cosmetics Act, the False Advertising Law, Consumer Fraud law, the Unfair Competition law and the Consumer Products Regulations of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).” Continue reading
